Biological electric cell: Make it yourself with lemons or grapefruit, a banana and a potato!
Materials
- 3 fresh lemons (or1 grapefruit, 1 banana and 1 potato)
- 9 copper coins (or any shape of copper plate)
- 3 small cardboards coated with aluminium foil or 3 nails of metal (galvanized or zinc steel)
- 3 paperclips
- 4 electric cords with "alligator" crowbars (or of the thread of telephone)
- Scissors
- 1 knife
- A small liquid crystal panel (or a LED bulb, or a bulb of 1,5 volt or less or a solar pocket calculator without its solar panel)
For each lemon :
Roll them on the table while pushing on them in order to make them softer
Make 2 notches. The notches have to be for a distance of 2 centimetres
Insert a patch of cardboard coated with aluminium in a notch. Fix a paperclip to the top
Pile 3 coins and push them vertically in the other notch until 3/4
 Assembly of the threads:
· Connect the negative pole of the dial with the coins of lemon 1
· Connect the paper clip of the aluminium patch of lemon 1 with the coins of lemon 2
· Connect the paper clip of the aluminium patch of lemon 2 with the coins of lemon 3
· Connect the paper clip of the aluminium patch of lemon 3 with the positive pole of the panel
Be patient! It may take one hour before the panel works and it should work for a few hours. If it still does not work, it is maybe because the poles are not placed correctly, or the electrical power is insufficient, or the fruit may not be fresh enough or the copper is oxidized (green spots). The following videos show assemblies of the battery:
